4 types of Welding | welding metal | SamenFerforge

4 types of welding which differs depending on the pieces that are to be welded.

There are many different types of metal out there, all with their specific set of characteristics and properties, which means there will be different approaches on how they are welded.

Metals

There is metal and then there are as many alloys as you can imagine. Tiniest of differences in the structure of metals are to be known as a different alloy.

Many metal industries work through welding to get to the proper result they need. Most popular products are at use thanks to welding.

One of the popular techniques to make Steel pipes is to use welding and attaching the two sides of steel sheets together.

Welding

This name refers to the process of adjoining metal pieces together by forcing so much heat to the point where welding needs to be done. The source of this heat is provided by the electricity by the welding power supply and it is released in a form of flame known as arc flame.

Types of welding

different methods of welding

There are many different types of welding methods out there but to choose one method solely depends on the metal that needs to be worked on. In this part we are going to mention the 4 method of welding in total.

  1. Shielded Metal Arc Welding

This process can be known as one of the oldest techniques out there that is usually done manually. This method is still used in various scales when it comes to various types of industries. It’s mostly used for welding steels that are thicker than 3mm. it’s used for building steel structures.

The heat which is provided by the welding power supply heats the stick (which is placed between the two parts of the steel that needs to be welded) and melts it down till they stick together.

  1. Gas Steel Arc Welding

In this method metal is heated by the use of power electrode. The molten liquid at this point is protected by the gas mentioned in the title of this method.

GMAW or MIG is known as one of the most popular welding procedures in metal industry. One good thing about MIG is the clean job that it lefts behind.

Yet there are some disadvantages that should be considered, like the expensiveness of the equipment along with the fact that unlike (SMAW) it can’t be performed in open spaces due to the gas protection.

  1. Flux Cores Arc Welding

You can consider this method an improved version of SMAW. This method is done a lot faster than the rest of techniques we mentioned and it is more exact which is why it’s more popular and common to be used in metal industries.

Unfortunately the equipment is too expensive.

  1. Gas Tungsten Arc Gas Welding

This method is best used when we want to attach non-ferrous metals and stainless steel together.

The tungsten electrode used in this type produces the weld.

GTAW or TIG is known as the most complex welding techniques and unfortunately it is time consuming as well.

Different metals, different approaches

To be a great welder, one needs to be familiar with all the welding techniques.

But is that enough?

No, sure not. Part of the job is to know the methods while the other half is to know the metal and its alloys. This knowledge would help you figure out how to process welding. Even though there is no ending to the number of alloys but still we are going to discuss some of the most important elements of this group and discuss best welding techniques for all of them.

  • Aluminum Welding

A great amount of heat should be added to this element to have the welding happen. To make the process happen with only a little welding wound it’s better to use an Oxide-free base.

You can always go for preheating the element since it lowers the cracking probability. Also the process of welding should be done very quickly to avoid sudden burns.

  • Steel Welding

Steel has many different alloys itself, which means there are different welding techniques for all of them along with many different tools to attach steel.

In general all those steels which include little amount of carbon in their structure are easy to be toyed with and welding would bring no difficulty. On other hand the steels with considerable amount of carbon are hard to be welded and other techniques should be taken into use.

  • Copper Welding

Welding is easy since copper can be welded fast and easily with only a little amount of heat. The copper which includes different types of brass and bronze can transfer the heat, and lose the ductility. For that sense welders need to be careful.

Bigger pieces of copper need to be preheated so they can be welded sufficiently.

In the end

As we mentioned there are many different welding techniques for attaching different types of metal. Right now you know the most important of these techniques. We went even further with different metals and their properties.

There are any safety considerations that need to be taken into mind. Other than the safety procedures note that there are different alloys of metal and you should always know the features to be able to perform welding.
